Black, Irene

June 1934 - June 2022
With love and sadness, we announce the passing of our kind and beautiful Mum and Grandma - Mary Irene Black (nee Milloy) who died peacefully on June 14th just 12 days after her 88th birthday and 1 year (May 20) after losing her darling husband of 64 years - Ian Ronald (Ron) Black. Born and raised in Glasgow (Clarkson), Scotland, she often recalled many happy memories of family holidays on the Isle of Arran and cycling throughout the Scottish countryside. Irene followed her parents, Jim and Maisie Milloy to Toronto after graduating as a Registered Nurse from Glasgow’s Victoria Infirmary in March 1956. Ron followed in early 1957 and they were married April 6 in Scarborough, Ontario. Irene leaves behind and is missed by daughters Fiona (David Robinson), Elspeth (Ken Smith) and Alison. She is also missed by grandchildren Tupac Guzman, Graeme Robinson (Francesca), Maya Wheeler (Doug) and Emma Robinson, and great-grandson Lysander Guzman Krane as well as her dear sister Anne Milloy Harper in Kingston. Irene was predeceased by her parents and brother James Milloy. She began her career in occupational health as a nurse at Confederation Life Insurance and was required to resign at the birth of her first child in July 1958. Two years later twin girls were added to the family and Irene had her hands full. They raised their family in Pickering, Ontario close to Ron’s teaching position at Ajax High School. During the summer months they would load the 3 girls into a station wagon (later a VW camper) and head to camp at their favourite place by the sea in Maine. As the girls grew older, Irene became a volunteer at her daughters’ school, the Bay Ridges Library and was also the treasurer for the Ajax Ladies’ Pipe Band. She eventually returned to work part-time as a venipuncturist in Ajax. Her mother Maisie had taken over Irene’s position at Confederation Life in 1958 and after she retired, Irene returned. Irene was there until Confederation Life closed in 1994 and retired to spend time travelling with Ron. They were able to have many enjoyable trips to Europe with Maisie and sister Anne, plus some wonderful trips back to Scotland to visit many of their favourite places. Irene and Ron also made countless cherished memories with their 4 grandchildren, proudly supporting them at extracurricular events and taking trips to Ogopogo Resort in Minden with them each summer. Due to family commitments and ill health, they were unable to travel in their later years. Irene was diagnosed with CIDP and required infusions every 3 weeks. The family is very grateful for the care and kindness received from Dr. Gharghi and the nurses at Ajax Hospital ACU as well as her many caregivers at home and more recently at Taunton Mills LTC. The family had a private viewing before the cremation and plan on a celebration of life for both parents at a future date.
Donations in Irene's memory can be made to your charity of choice or GBS/CIDP Foundation (gbscidp.com). Fond memories and expressions of sympathy are appreciated.
