It is with great sadness that the family of Patrick Larter announce his recent passing. A loving husband and father, Patrick will be forever missed and remembered as a compassionate, kind and grateful soul.
His spirit lives on in his loving wife, Gwen Larter and children: Frances, Herman, Barbara, John and many grand children.
Born to Kathleen and Delmar Larter on August 5, 1938 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, he was an only child.
Patrick graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. He moved to Toronto in the late 1960s seeking opportunity and was accepted into Osgoode Law School at the University of Toronto. Deciding it wasn’t for him, he landed a role as an Employment Counselor within the Ministry of Education. Patrick had a big heart and this role brought him fulfillment, as he was able to help people. After a successful career as a dedicated public servant, he retired after 40 years of service.
Patrick was an avid reader and pop culture enthusiast, but his true passion was music. When asked by his daughter Barbara - Dad, if you could do anything in the world what would it be? Play the guitar, he said. And that he did! He spent his golden years jamming with local musicians, playing folk songs like Heart of Gold by Neil Young at family gatherings. Music brought him great joy.
We know Patrick is at peace and jamming in heaven, playing his favorite tunes like Knocking on Heavens Door, by Bob Dylan and many more.
Please join us to honor his memory on Saturday June 18, 2022 at Accettone Funeral Home located at 384 Finely Avenue, Ajax, ON L1S 2E3. Visitation begins at 11am followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 1pm.
Patrick was fun loving and had a great sense of humor. We the family ask that you come to embrace his humorous and loving nature as we celebrate his life together.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider donating to Durham Mental Health Services in loving memory of Patrick Larter.

Although I had not seen Pat for over 20 years, I have fond memories of working on the same employment counselling team, and hearing the good advice he provided to so many people. Pat was always there to help.

This week, we have spent much time reflecting on the powerful impact Patrick had on all who knew him and on the New Leaf and Music Group Programs he attended so faithfully as to be a pillar of both. So many considered him a close friend and spoke about how welcomed he helped them to feel, how much they valued his sage advice and his sense of humor. For many, his unwavering and unconditional positive regard was something unmatched in their lives and for some, something they had never experienced before. The tears shed this week were often interrupted by laughter and happy stories. While it is true that Patrick took great joy in the New Leaf community he helped to build, he also brought so much joy to the lives of others. Please know that he was valued emmensely by the Peer Staff Team and by the members and that his legacy will be preserved. When the newest member is made welcome, when the person struggling to function is reminded to do their dishes, when yet another Buble song is requested in music class, it is his spirit that will be carried forward. We will miss him dearly and forever cherish the many gifts he offered so generously. Tanya and the Peer Support Team at DMHS
